History

Several years ago, the Chapter initiated the movement to place flags and framed flag codes in every school room in East Carroll Parish.  With the help of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary ninety-three in all were donated.

The Good Citizenship Pilgrimage has received our support since the early days.  Two of our members have received the State award.   In 1941, Margie Wagley, representing  Monticello High School, went to Washington, at the time of Continental Congress.  In 1949, Celeste Hammack, of  Lake Providence High School, won the bond given by the State Society.

Our Chapter placed its name in the Valley Forge Memorial.  We also convinced the Hon. Joseph E. Ransdell, ex-United States Senator from Louisiana, to place a memorial there in honor of Mrs. Ransdell.

We are on the Star Honor Roll for our contributions to the building program in Washington.

Mrs. J.W. McDaniel, our first Regent, resigned in November 1936.  Mrs. Crawford A. Rose was elected to fill out Mrs. McDaniel's unexpired term, then served a term of her own.  She was Regent from December 1936 to May 1941.  Mrs. George Hider was the next Regent  from May 1941 to May 1944.   Mrs. Edward Schneider's term was from 1944-1947.  Mrs. Alex S. Hill succeeded her for the next three years, 1947-1950.  Mrs. Arthur Crump was elected Regent in May 1950, but she resigned in October.  Mrs. George Hider agreed to accept the Regency for a second time.

Almost from the beginning, Moses Shelby has had a State Officer.  Mrs. Frank Brown was elected Recording Secretary in 1936 with Mrs. A. R. Lacey of Shreveport as State Regent.  In 1939 Mrs. Edward Schneider was elected Recording Secretary with Mrs. C.M. Flower of Monroe as State Regent. In 1942 Mrs. Crawford Rose became State Librarian on the ticket of Mrs. Thomas F. Moody of  Baton Rouge.   Because of the war, this administration served four years instead of the customary three(until 1946).  Then Mrs. George Hider became State Librarian during the regime of Mrs. P.C. Fair of Mansfield.  In 1948, Mrs. Edward Schneider became State Librarian with Mrs. J.N. Pharr of New Iberia as State Regent.  At the present time Mrs. Vail Delony was State Librarian on Mrs. Herbert Parker's ticket.  Mrs. Schneider served as State Regent, 1957-1960.  Other recent state officers include Mrs. Harvey Howington, Mrs. Philip Brown, and Mrs. Carl Bonner.

The Moses Shelby Chapter has a special interest in the State Circulating Library of Genealogy and History.  The state NSDAR genealogical library was housed in Mrs. Hider's and Mrs. Delony's homes while they were state librarians.  The idea for such a collection was conceived by Mrs. Thomas F. Moody, and was implemented during her term as State Regent.  Every State Librarian since that time has been a member of the Moses Shelby Chapter.  The Chapter was instrumental in naming the Library the "Annie Laurie Moody Circulating Library."

When the State Officers Club was organized in 1949, three members of Moses Shelby Chapter were  elected: Mrs. George Hider, Mrs. Edward Schneider, and Mrs. Crawford Rose.  Mrs. Rose served as the first Secretary-Treasurer with Mrs. J.C. Liner of Monroe as President.

Mrs. Edward Schneider served as Chairman of the State Committees for the Constitution Hall Memory Book and for Motion Pictures.  She was chairman of Zone 3 of the Student Loan Fund as well.  Mrs. Arthur Crump was State Chairman of the Filing and Lending Bureau.
